Pretty Hot & Tasty

Hot dog stand meets Hard Rock Cafe is the theme of Walt and Donna Scott's new resturant in Powdersville. After a year of hard work the couple opened Phat Dogs which blends a simple menu of hot dogs, bratwursts and chili. The music-themed decor that includes working instruments and memorabilia is nostalgic and delightful.

Phat Dogs is located at 11061 Highway 81 Powdersville in the 81 Plaza.

The Phat Dog Story

In the beginning, we had normal 8-5 jobs with major corporations in the upstate. They promised great benefits, and a lifetime of opportunities & retirement. After WE employees helped build these corporations to world class status, the companies then sought cheaper labor in both Mexico & China leaving dedicated U.S. employees without jobs.

Being faced with this, we decided its time to take control of our own destiny. Phat Dogs started out as a dream, and became reality on May 20th, 2004. We became aware of the word Phat through our (now grown) children. The word Phat in the modern dictionary means 1st rate, excellent and if you will, all things good. With a name that means 1st rate, we have to strive to be the best. The best hot dog, the best atmosphere, & the best service. Our hot dogs are kosher, Hebrew National franks. Our atmosphere is a mini musical museum that will take you on a stroll down memory lane. A musical atmosphere was chosen because the owners (Walt & Donna Scott) have a passion for music.

As Shakespeare said “If music be the food of love, play on, play on, play on”!

POWDERSVILLE — Necessity, the old saying goes, is the mother of invention. But in this case, necessity is the mother of a hot dog.
That's the story behind Phat Dogs, a hot dog-stand-meets-Hard Rock Cafe that opened in May.

The restaurant came about because Walt Scott, co-owner with his wife Donna, knew his longtime manufacturing job was headed overseas.

"In the summer of 2003, (the company) put out a letter saying they were going to close down all manufacturing facilities in the U.S., move everything to China and Mexico," Scott said. "So when I received that letter, I knew I had to start planning on what I was going to do. So Donna and I started brainstorming about opening our own business."

They hit upon the idea of a hot dog business because, Walt Scott said, he hadn't found any Upstate hot dog places with dogs that measured up to his expectations.

After a year of hard work, the couple opened Phat Dogs, which blends a simple menu — hot dogs, bratwursts and chili is about as complex as it gets — with a music-themed decor that includes working musical instruments, memorabilia and even old album covers from Donna's collection of vinyl.

But while customers might appreciate the trimmings, the main draw has to be the dogs. So the Scotts went with the best hot dog they could find, an all-beef kosher frank made by Hebrew National. The dogs come in two sizes: the quarter-pound Phat Dog ($3.00) and the eighth-pound Phat Pup ($1.50). Chili adds 45 cents to the cost of either hot dog.

And the chili, made with beans, is Donna's own recipe, which Walt prepares just about every day. The same chili is available by the bowl ($3.05).

For their Phat Brats ($3.05), the couple decided to use Johnsonville Beer in Bratwursts.

Phat Dogs is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays; closed Sundays. The restaurant seats 27 inside and another 18 outside, weather permitting. Reservations are not necessary.

Alcohol is not served. Smoking is permitted outside only. Located 11061 Anderson Road, Powdersville; call 269-8731.
